Louisiana is an “Employment at Will” state which means you can be fired or quit your job at any time for no reason. The two main exceptions to employment at will are discrimination and retaliation.
Discrimination means you can’t be fired because of your age, gender, disability, religion, or national origin.
For example if your employer fired you and several other employees and if all of you were over 40, then maybe you were being treated differently because of age.
In most cases, if you can prove a case of retaliation or discrimination, your recovery will include:
- loss of earnings
- general damages
- punitive damages
- court costs and attorney’s fees

“Civil Rights” is a very broad term and the cases are very complex.
What happened to you? Were you arrested by a police officer? Do you think the police officer used too much force? Were you fired by your employer for complaining about something you thought was illegal?
If you feel your civil rights have been violated, you need to see a lawyer who knows the law.
